   Life

Have you ever wondered if you are good enough to get into heaven?

God originally created man without sin, but sin came into the world through the disobedience of Adam and Eve (Romans 5:12).  As a result of this, we are all born sinners and we choose to sin out of our own free will.  The Bible says, “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23).

You may be thinking to yourself, "But I am not that bad.  I've never killed anyone.  I'm not as bad as some people."

But take a look at your situation from God's point of view.  For example:

1.  Have you ever told a lie?

The ninth of the Ten Commandments is, "You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor."  Telling just one lie, according to God's standards, makes you a liar.  In Revelation 21:8 God tells us, "....all liars, shall have their part in the lake of fire..."

2.  Have you ever looked at someone and had lustful thoughts?

The seventh of the Ten Commandments is, "You shall not commit adultery."  If you've ever looked at another person with lustful thoughts, according to God's standards, that makes you an adulterer.  Jesus said, "You have heard it was said to those of old, 'You shall not commit adultery.'  But I say to you, that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart" (Matthew 5:27-28).  In 1 Corinthians 6:9-10 God tells us that no adulterers, ".... shall inherit the kingdom of God."

3.  Have you ever used God, Jesus, or Christ as a curse word?

The third of the Ten Commandments is, "You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain."  If you have ever used the name of God for a curse word, then what you have done is take the name of God and you have used it as if it were a four-letter filth word to express disgust.  That offense is called blasphemy, and according to God's standards, you are a blasphemer.  In Leviticus 24:16 God says, "whoever blasphemes the name of the LORD shall surely be put to death..."

4. Have you ever stolen anything (no matter how small)?

The eighth of the Ten Commandments is, "You shall not steal."  Stealing just one thing (regardless of it's size or monetary value) according to God's standards makes you a thief.  In 1 Corinthians 6:10 God says, "No thieves... ...will inherit the kingdom of God."

5.  Have you ever broken the first commandment?

The first of the Ten Commandments is, "You shall have no other gods before Me."  That means that we should love God with all of our heart, mind, soul and strength.  The Bible tells us that no one has kept this commandment (Psalm 14:2-3).

But I go to Church.  I read my Bible.  I am a good person.

Going to church and reading the Bible are all good activities, but none of these things impress God.  The Bible says, "and all our righteousnesses are like filthy rags; we all fade as a leaf, and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away" (Isaiah 64:6).  This means all of our righteous acts (these good deeds) can never make up for the fact that we have broken God's holy commandments.  Think of it this way.  If a person was guilty of a serious crime (such as murder) but he gave money to a good cause, does that make up for his crime?  No.  The person's crime has not been paid for because he gave money to a charity.  This good deed will mean nothing to the judge when he passes sentence.  The sin and crime of murder must still be punished.

Just looking at five of God's commandments tells us that we are all guilty of sin before God.

What does our guilt of sin mean for us?

The Bible is clear about the consequence of sin.  God used the Apostle Paul to tell us, "For the wages of sin is death" (Romans 6:23).  This includes more than just dying; this also means eternal separation and punishment from God.

Keep reading because God has provided a solution!
